Tracer Gas Leak Detection

Advanced tracer gas technology for locating difficult underground water leaks. Using safe, non-toxic hydrogen-nitrogen mixture, we find leaks that acoustic methods cannot detect.

How Tracer Gas Detection Works

Tracer gas detection uses a safe, non-toxic mixture of hydrogen (5%) and nitrogen (95%) to locate underground leaks. The gas is introduced into the pipe system, escapes through the leak point, rises through soil to the surface, and is detected by highly sensitive gas sensors.

This technology is particularly valuable for locating leaks in non-pressurized systems, plastic pipes that dont transmit sound well, or situations where acoustic methods are ineffective due to background noise or pipe materials.

The Tracer Gas Process

  1. 1
System Preparation: The pipe section is isolated and drained of water if necessary.
  2. 2
Gas Introduction: The hydrogen-nitrogen mixture is injected into the pipe at controlled pressure.
  3. 3
Surface Scanning: A sensitive gas detector is moved across the ground surface above the pipe route.
  4. 4
Leak Identification: The detector signals when hydrogen is detected, indicating the leak location.
  5. 5
Precision Location: The area of highest concentration is marked as the leak point.

Advantages of Tracer Gas

Works on All Pipe Materials

Effective on plastic, metal, concrete, and composite pipes regardless of acoustic properties

Non-Pressurized Systems

Can locate leaks in drain lines, sewer laterals, and gravity-fed systems

Low Background Noise

Not affected by traffic, machinery, or other acoustic interference

Safe & Non-Toxic

The gas mixture is completely safe for people, property, and environment

Best Applications for Tracer Gas

  • Plastic Pipes: HDPE, PVC, and other plastics that dont transmit acoustic signals well
  • Low Pressure Systems: Irrigation lines, gravity-fed systems, and low-pressure mains
  • Noisy Environments: Industrial sites, busy roadways, construction areas
  • Complex Configurations: Multiple pipes, joints, and fittings where sound paths are unclear
  • Deep Pipes: Leaks in pipes too deep for effective acoustic detection
  • Pool & Spa Lines: Underground pool plumbing and recirculation systems

Safety Information

The hydrogen-nitrogen mixture we use is completely safe:

  • • Only 5% hydrogen - far below flammable concentration (4% minimum for ignition)
  • • Non-toxic and environmentally harmless
  • • Quickly dissipates into atmosphere
  • • Safe for use near buildings, vegetation, and occupied areas
  • • No residue or contamination of water systems
